Despite what its name might suggest, Bizeul’s 2007 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Le Clos de Fees represents as usual an assemblage from various sites near Vingrau, but unlike those chosen for his less expensive reds, the parcels selected her e are essentially the same year after year. Additional viticultural rigor and selection, primary fermentation in larger barrels, malo-lactic fermentation in new barriques, and 18 months’ stay there on the lees characterize this blend of aro und equal parts Carignan, Grenache, Mourvedre, and Syrah. A close approximation to the final assemblage exhibited a terrific combination of density with polish and refinement of tannins; richness with lift and vivacity; and sweet ripe plum and black cherry with rosemary, cherry pit, roasted meat, and crushed stone. An alluring saline, savory streak runs all the way through, with a long, luscious, bitter-sweet finishing glide path. A hit of vanilla is the only obvious manifest ation of new wood, nor is there a trace of heat. I suspect this will be an excellent candidate for 8-10 years of aging.

Här har vi ett av många mycket intressanta vinprojekt nere i området vid Perpignan. Egendomen består av 130 noga utvalda parceller i detta bergiga område. Vinerna är väldigt fruktdrivna samtidigt som de uppvisar fin koncentration och klassisk elegans.

Herve Bizeul practices a ruthlessly controlled viticultural regimen focused on some 130 parcels of selection massale vines in the dramatically rocky, yet clay-permeated limestone environment north of Vingrau, and his pursuit of concentration and purity continues with meticulous selectivity of plots and lots (much of the crop is sold off each year) as well as of clusters and berries. Add to this a fruit-pampering vinification, and the result is wines that have turned heads every bit as much as does the local scenery and brought Bizeul well-deserved recognition as a beacon of Roussillon quality.
