2007, Sassicaia DOC Tenuta San Guido, Toscana Sassicaia DOC
Sassicaia, er naturligvis flagskibet fra vingården Tenuta San Guido. Sassicaia har det misundelsesværdige ry som den originale og stadig den berømteste Cabernet baserede vin fra Toscana. Godset har selv 148 hektar med vin i den sydvestlige kyst zone i Toscana. Navnet Sassicaia betyder bogstaveligt "et sted med mange sten" og Sassicaia's terroir bærer en uhyggelig lighed med Médoc, bortset fra at vinmarkerne her er relativt højt beliggende (250-600 meter over havets overflade) i forhold til de lavtliggende ejendomme i Médoc.
Vinmarkerne er beplantet med 85% Cabernet Sauvignon og 15% Cabernet Franc. De oprindelige beplantninger i 1940'erne omfattede podninger købt fra Chateau Lafite Rothschild, og sammenligninger man med de berømte vine i Pauillac, er det svært ikke at smage ligheden. Sassicaia har også den ære at være den eneste vin i verden, der har sin egen DOC!
Men det er nok bedst at afslutte med et par ord fra den amerikanske kritiker Steve Tanzer: "'Tasting through several consecutive vintages of Sassicaia with winemaker Sebastiano Rosa (formerly at Argiano in Montalcino), one can't help noticing the indelible sense of terroir that emanates from the 25 to 30 year-old vines that run deep in the stony soils of the San Guido estate (sasso means stone in Italian). Finesse, not power, is the hallmark of these wines. As Rosa put it to me, "we look for balance and suppleness - the Bordeaux model. We don't look for deeply colored and extracted, palate-staining wines'. · 93P - James Suckling d. 12.05.14: "This is classy on the nose with subtle currant, sweet tobacco, cigar box and dried flowers. Cassis too. Full body, with refined tannins and a solid core of fruit. Polished and very pretty. Long and delicious already. But you have to wait on this. It has so much more to give. Try after 2015." · 96 pts - Good Wine Guide 2012: "A regal nose for this Super Tuscan, this blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc has plenty of dark cassis and ripe berry fruit on the nose, and purple florals. It's an elegant and composed wine, with smells of chalk and gravel, of earth, cedary oak , and of sweet spice and purple musk - really intriguing stuff. The palate has serious savoury, wildly herbal cabernet depth, and plenty of ripeness played against a fresh edge. Lithe and taut, acidity plays an integral role-stretching flavor even and long. Tannins are supple and soft - really even and juicy - deceptively concentrated and impeccably balanced. Dark wild cherries, plums, spices, minerals and herbs develop in the glass. This is an especially bold, perhaps slightly uncharacteristic Sassicaia in its extroverted personality, but it is beautiful all the same. The inner perfume and sweetness carries through the long finish, where the sheer weight and glycerol of the fruit leaves a lasting impression. The 2007 is more than a worthy follow-up to the profound 2006. While it may lack that wine's freshness, structure and potential longevity, the 2007 is immensely appealing today, and should drink beautifully pretty much out of the gate. That said, Sassicaia is always the most restrained of Bolgheri's heavy hitters. This is a superb effort from Tenuta San Guido.
